"Brodie’s subjects are essentially American romantics whose hereditary allegiance to national history (quite apart from national identity) extends back past the Beat Generation, Hart Crane, Jack London and before him Walt Whitman to Henry David Thoreau, and the original appetitive wanderlust that set its gaze on the breadth of an unchartered frontier. Their most vividly and tragically memorialised contemporary peer would be Alexander Supertramp, the final avatar of young Chris McCandless, whose exploits and early death were described in Into the Wild. In their varied manners and guises, these largely male figures have reworked the basic model of the self-sufficient cowboy to suit their own inflexible addiction to ceaseless spontaneity and open space, and in the form in which we encounter them in this work, they have not merely added grunge to a remarkable quantity of grit, but community to an essentially individualist mythology.”
